The United States talks a lot about spreading democracy throughout the world and the importance of freedom of speech and equality for all. But does the rest of the world agree that those are the principles we stand up for and defend?
After the elections in Iran were certified, Secretary of State Clinton was asked about the results and her comment was, “these internal matters are for Iranians themselves.” Now that’s standing up for democracy. Although it is a shame that the same response is given to accusations about voter fraud here in the United States.
Recent polling shows that 75% of Iranians disagree that the United States will allow people in the Middle East region to shape their own political future without direct US influence, and 80% don’t believe the US really wants to establish democratic systems in the region.
What a shame the numbers are for us here in the United States who watched Iranians take to the streets in protest of their government that once again squashed any real freedom of speech. But what really bothered me more was the silence the administration showed when people were losing their lives in the streets of Iran for our dearest principle…freedom.
Does The US Really Want Democracy In The Middle East?
