Recent news reports show that Congressional leaders are cool to the idea of $25 billion government sponsored financial assistance for the top 3 automakers in America. Today on Capitol Hill, executives from Ford, Chrysler and General Motors received a less than enthusiastic reception from members of the House Financial Services Committee. In addition, Senate Majority Leader Reid dropped plans for a scheduled vote on the automaker financial assistance package. This type of sentiment seems inline with most Americans as a recent Rasmussen survey showed that only 30% supported such a measure.
Contrast that with the $700 billion economic rescue package passed by Congress last month. Despite that fact that only 25% of Americans thought the plan would be good for the country, Congressional Leaders passed that package anyway.
The data suggests that members of Congress might be listening to constituent’s opinions. Then again, the same survey found that only 26% of Americans were confident that members of Congress knew how to handle the current financial crisis.
